Bridget knew I was leaving, but apparently my cover story was going to camp. It was okay, I guessed, because nobody really asked where the camp was, or why I was going in the first place. It wasn’t even the end of the regular school year, and still nobody questioned it. But Bridget gave me a big hug, and I had a feeling she knew more than she let on.

Thankfully, Wolf let me go to the Emergency Rooms one last time, probably because I lied and said I needed something from there; a hair clip, my favourite. It currently sat in my pocket, but if he knew that, he never would have let me go.

When I found Seth’s room, I just stared at the door. Was I really doing this? Was I going to tell him how much I liked him just before I left for who knew how long? I knocked on the door, surprising even myself with the answer; yes.

The door opened, and Seth’s golden eyes met mine. I thought I saw them soften.

“Hi,” I squeaked, chewing on the inside of my cheeks when I realized I had no idea what to say.

“Hey,” he said back, glancing around. He probably had no idea what I was doing there. That wasn’t so bad, that made two of us.

“I—uhm…I’m leaving today,” I blurted, “and I just wanted to say bye.”

“Leaving?” His brow furrowed. “Leaving where?”

“C-camp?” I suggested. “It’s sudden, but I wanted to say something—before I left.”

“Okay.” He nodded.

That was my sign to start talking, to say something that might convey how I felt about him. But even I wasn’t completely sure how I felt. I had all the symptoms that my characters had; wobbly legs, racing heart, inability to think clearly. But did that add up to love? I felt the same around Gavin as well, so maybe it was just me. Seth’s eyes just kept my gaze, until I blurted, “I like you.”

His eyebrows shot up, and a hand rested against the doorframe. A strange sense of mist crept over my skin, sinking in until my entire body felt like I was soaking wet. Seth asked, “What?”

“You. I. Ah…I like you, like, like like you,” I stammered. “I just wanted to say that before I left which I’m now realizing was a really bad idea.”

Seth’s fingertips turned black, the dark shadowy flames beginning to slowly lash from his fingertips. They came towards me, but moved no further than a few inches from his hand against the frame. He blinked. “It was a bad idea. But it’s a good thing you’re leaving now, I guess.”

I flinched back.

He continued, “You’re not really my type, sorry. We probably shouldn’t talk anymore.” He was so monotone as he spoke, that I wasn’t sure if I was hearing him right.

The door slammed in my face.

Rejected. Again.
